Local Artist Receives $10,000 Public Arts Grant

Local artist Glenn Urquhart was awarded a $10,000 grant by LAND, Inc., with support from Bank of America through the Mack Avenue Green T Public Art Contest. The grant is being used as part of a larger strategy to address Detroit’s blighted, vacant and unused commercial corridors. The competition of the Mack Avenue Green T Public Art contest began March 1, 2015 with entries due by April 1, 2015, whose projects were evaluated by a panel of five judges. Judging took place on April 15, 2015, with awards given out on May 1, 2015. The final project will now be unveiled on August 4, 2015 at 1:00 p.m., at the project site. Urquhart’s winning design will blend in with the bioswale installed in the right-of-way and other installations within the corridor, as well as integrate with the corridor’s history and incorporate at least 50 percent of reclaimed materials.
